The PCT follows the aqueduct for several miles through the Mojave Desert. Due to the high temperature, hikers will frequently tackle this stretch at night. Mile 520.

Joshua trees and windmills, neither in short supply in the northern desert. Mile 558.

#9 Kiavah Wilderness
Arid desert gives way to the southern Sierra Mountains. Mile 648.

Looking down from Forester Pass ascent, elevation 13,153. Mile 780.

#11 Kearsarge Pinnacles
Exiting the Sierras for resupply poses its own challenges but does provide additional views. Bullfrog Lake trail, PCT mile 789.

Bullfrog Lake trail ends at Onion Valley, providing access to Independence, and a bus ride to Bishop.

#13 Rae Lakes (sold)
Descending from Glen Pass, the PCT threads between Rae Lakes, giving a mirrored view of Mt. Rixford. Mile 794.

#14 Muir Shelter
At the top of John Muir Pass, the hut is another famous PCT landmark and a welcome site after traversing snow fields on a long ascent. Mile 839.8.

#15 River Crossing
The benefits of a low snow year include a much more reasonable crossing of Evolution Creek. Mile 844.2.

#16 Thousand Island Lake
At mile 924, the PCT rejoins the John Muir trail just south of Yosemite National Park.

#17 Lembert Dome, Yosemite National Park
The PCT crosses western Yosemite, mile 943.7.

#18 Sonora Peak
At times the trail provides a sense of isolation from normal life. Mile 1020.

The early morning sun illuminates the Sierras near Reynold’s Peak. Est mile 1054.

Fed from underground springs, this 129 foot waterfall flows constantly year-round. The falls are short detour off mile 1420.

#23 Watchman
A lone tree trunk keeps watch over a smoke shrouded Llao Bay near Merriam Point. The PCT alternate trail runs along the west rim of Crater Lake between miles 1824 and 1840.

The sun peaks through morning clouds behind Mt. Theisen. Mile 1855.

#25 Crescent Lake
Low mountains and expanses of endless trees are typical of the trail in central Oregon. Mile 1884.5.

An undisturbed Lower Rosary Lake, mid morning. Mile 1911.7.

#27 Off trail
Trail towns beckon to thirsty hikers. This Cascade Locks brewery overlooks the Columbia River. Most will spend at least one day a week off trail to rest, shower, resupply, as well as a much-needed caloric boost. Mile 2149.3.

#28 Mt. Adams
The weather flipped a switch on entering Washington, becoming cool and damp. Mt Adams seen from Riley Creek, mile 2241.8.

#29 Waterfall
The Goat Rocks Wilderness area was a close second to the Sierras. A waterfall south of Ives Peak, mile 2275.6.

#30 Knife’s Edge
Another iconic PCT stretch in the Goat Rocks Wilderness area, Knife’s Edge runs above the cloud line, mile 2280.

#31 Widow makers
Trees in a burn area can fall with surprisingly little sound. Best not to linger. Mile 2338.

A mountain goat joins the trail north of Snoqualmie Pass. Mile 2399.

The whole Washington section feels like it’s entirely in the cloud layer… Lunchtime is spent laying my gear out to dry. Mile 2452.9

#35 Stehekin
Accessible by ferry or trail shuttle, Shehekin was my final stop before reaching the Canadian border. Mile 2574.6.
