Belden

After 3 and a half days of hiking, I covered the 92 miles between Sierra City and Belden, getting in last evening. First, I got to see evidence of the larger fire to the east.

Fortunately, the trail turned west at this point, heading in the opposite direction. Yesterday the air was a bit hazy, but not overly smoky. Made for a nice sunrise from Lookout Rock, though.

The main obstacle this stretch has been the heat, as Belden has been hitting 100 degrees. Water sources have been ok for now, which is good as I’m having to drink a lot more to stay hydrated. Two days ago was the 3000 ft climb out of Feather River canyon, which I had to delay at Bear Creek until things cooled down slightly.

Much of this section has fire damage already, adding to the scorch appeal.

Today will likely be a zero day, as I’ve been pushing hard since Tahoe, including three consecutive 25 mile days. I’d be prouder of my progress if not for the stream of lanky 20-somethings blowing past me on a daily basis en route to 30-35 mile days despite sleeping in an extra 3 hours. So I guess it’s all relative…

Do campground chipmunks like Larabars? Signs point to yes.

Happy trails!

  3. Do the chipmunks barter? Always wondered what the going rate for a Larabar was in acorn currency… Keep it up!!
