Week one in the Sierras brought me 87 miles from Kennedy Meadows to Kearsarge Pass, a somewhat lengthy exit to Onion Valley trailhead. From there was a hitch to Independence followed by a bus ride to Bishop for resupply.

Early week was tough, with frequent climbs and a full 7 days of supplies, particularly after lollygagging at Kennedy Meadows for an extra day. At the last minute, I switched out my Hokas for a pair of Altra Olympus 4’s, as I was having nagging heel pain at the Achilles’ tendon insert, which seems to have resolved the problem.

The scenery got increasingly jaw dropping as the week progressed. I am thankful for the conditioning of the past several weeks, as the week would have been far more difficult otherwise. Especially after losing about 20 pounds…

I skipped Whitney, as I’ve summited it in the past. Forester Pass was challenging enough with a full pack. The south side was fairly snow free, with large patches of snow on the north side, but manageable with microspikes.

The descent from Forester (once out of the snow) continuing to Kearsarge was probably my favorite part of the trail to date.

It’s been an awe inspiring trip so far. I want to thank all the commenters, even if I haven’t been able to reply (I read and appreciate each one). Nice not to just be talking to yourself, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Next will be a 6 day push to Vermilion Valley Resort, followed by another 3 days to Mammoth, which will likely be my next update.
Til’ then, happy trails.

So proud of all you’ve done so far!

I found your blog via a St. Luke’s tweet. I’m a long-time section hiker (completed 1500 miles so far) from the Wood River Valley. I’m really enjoying following your journey. Wow, there is so little snow in the Sierra this time of year. Looks more like late June. Thanks for sharing your journey. Hike on!

Yes, looks more like August than June. At least the hiking and river crossings are easier. Thanks for reading.
