Training report

Today was a 10 mile hike at Hull’s Gulch. I ran into a lot of snow at Upper Hull’s, which gave me a chance to try out my new Katoola microspikes. Overall I was happy with them; good traction and felt solid on my feet. Despite that, it was still slow going.

I started training for the PCT last year, figuring my 20’s were long gone and I’d be more susceptible to injury. I was able to put in a lot of hiking until late October, ranging from about 20 to 50 miles a week dependent on my work schedule. This was significantly curtailed over the winter given a surge in COVID-19 cases, work projects, shorter days, and bad weather. I’ve substituted some weight training, which is better than nothing.

I’ll plan on averaging about 15 miles a day to start. To complete the trail, this will need to go up to 20-25 miles a day past the Sierras.
